The Heart of PHP
If you develop in PHP, then you are already an active user of Zend technology.

Since 1997, Zeev Suraski and Andi Gutmans have been leaders in the PHP Open-Source Project. This started with the revolutionary work of PHP 3, which shaped PHP as we know it and sparked the flame of massive PHP adoption by raising PHP to the level of a full-featured development language.

Their work continued with the redesign of PHP 4, which saw the introduction of the Zend Engine - the core scripting engine of PHP, plus many additional development features and platform support beyond Linux/Apache. This release introduced a highly optimized scripting engine.

The performance and reliability that the Zend Engine brought to PHP is the fuel that has made PHP the most popular language for dynamic web site development.

Zend is continuing its commitment to PHP and open-source development, with its work on Zend Engine II and III. ZE II made its debut in PHP 5.0 with even more revolutionary capabilities, including its built-in robust object model. You can follow the development on Zend's PHP Forum, or read more about ZE II here.

The Zend Engine is open-source software and available under a Apache-style license. Both PHP 4.x featuring the Zend Engine I and PHP 5 featuring Zend Engine II can be downloaded at http://www.php.net/downloads.php.
